1060 aluminum alloy and 6063 aluminum alloy difference

1060 aluminum alloy and 6063 aluminum alloy are two common aluminum alloys, which have different compositions, properties and application characteristics. Here are the main 

differences:

1. Different ingredients

1060 aluminum alloy:

Main ingredients: Aluminum content is more than 99.6%, almost pure aluminum.

1060 aluminum alloy is a pure aluminum alloy series, containing a small amount of copper, iron, manganese, silicon and other elements, used to improve certain characteristics.

6063 Aluminum alloy:

Main composition: Aluminum content is about 97.9%, the main alloying elements are magnesium (Mg) and silicon (Si).

6063 alloy is an aluminum-Mg-silicon alloy (heat treatment strengthened alloy), which is often used in the manufacture of extruded profiles.

2. Mechanical properties

1060 aluminum alloy:

The strength is low, and the tensile strength is generally between 110-160 MPa.

1060 aluminum alloy is mainly suitable for those who do not have high strength requirements, such as electrical conductors, chemical equipment and so on.

Because it contains higher pure aluminum, it has better corrosion resistance and higher electrical conductivity, but its hardness and strength are lower than 6063 aluminum alloy.

6063 Aluminum alloy:

The strength is high, the tensile strength is generally between 180-250 MPa, and it has good mechanical strength.

6063 aluminum alloy has good extrusion performance, surface treatment performance and medium corrosion resistance, and is often used in construction, transportation, aviation and 

other fields of structural parts.

Due to the presence of magnesium and silicon, 6063 aluminum alloy has good strength, corrosion resistance and processing properties.

3. Physical properties

1060 aluminum alloy:

Electrical conductivity: good, suitable for electrical field.

Thermal conductivity: good, suitable for heat exchange and other applications.

Corrosion resistance: very good, suitable for chemical industry, food processing and other corrosive environment with high requirements.

6063 Aluminum alloy:

Electrical conductivity: better than some other aluminum alloys, but not as good as 1060 aluminum alloys.

Corrosion resistance: Excellent, especially suitable for outdoor buildings, window frames and other applications exposed to the natural environment for a long time.

Formability: good, easy to extrude molding, superior surface treatment performance, easy to color and paint.

4. Application field

1060 aluminum alloy:

Application: 1060 aluminum alloy is often used in applications requiring high electrical conductivity and high corrosion resistance. Common applications include:

Electrical conductor (e.g. wire and cable),Chemical equipment (e.g. storage tanks, pipes),Food processing equipment,Auto parts.

6063 Aluminum alloy:

Applications: 6063 aluminum alloy is widely used in areas requiring higher strength, better surface effect and corrosion resistance. Common applications include:

Building and structural profiles (e.g. doors, Windows, curtain walls),Aerospace field,Auto parts,Bicycles and sports equipment,Furniture and decorative materials

5. Processing performance

1060 aluminum alloy:

Good processability, but because of its low strength, more used for simple processing needs, such as stamping, rolling and so on.

The shape can be changed by cold working, heat treatment, etc., but the mechanical strength will not be significantly increased.

6063 Aluminum alloy:

The processability is also very good, especially suitable for hot extrusion molding. The 6063 alloy can be further increased in strength and hardness by heat treatment (such as T5, T6, etc.).

Because of its good surface treatment performance, it is often used in products that need a beautiful appearance, such as balcony railings, window frames, etc.

In SUMMARY:

In general, 1060 aluminum alloy is mainly pure aluminum, with good electrical conductivity and corrosion resistance, suitable for occasions with low strength requirements; 

The 6063 aluminum alloy contains magnesium and silicon, and has high strength, which is suitable for construction profiles, aerospace and other fields that require high strength and 

beautiful surfaces.
